Does "automatically upgrade any superseded versions of this application" update all instances of an application regardless of deployment ?

Hi

I want to update a core application which has been installed on all machines as part of the OSD.  I want to supersede the existing version with the latest one and want to test it first by deploying it to a test collection.  I have only ever superseded applications deployed to user collections before.

I have just seen the automatically upgrade any superseded versions of this applicationoption.  Previously I have created my deployments prior to setting the supersedence rules and this option doesn't come up.  If I set supersedence prior to doing the deploy I see the option but was wondering what it actually does.  Does it, as the name suggests update any existence of the previous versions of the software which is currently installed anywhere, regardless of the collection I deploy the updated software  to ?  I don't want to update the software on production machines before I have tested the update mechanism on some test machines.

Thanks

G
