One of our software deployment technicians brought up an interesting conundrum. Hoping one of you has a simple solution:
We deploy an application not visible in SW center X days before the deadline to prestage the content. We file change control to indicate when the installations will occur.
A small percent of users have set the computer maintenance settings within software center to "Automatically install or uninstall required software ... outside of business hours" .
These users begin the install ahead of the intended deadline. We could prevent the installation by not making the application available, but that precludes prestaging of the content. In some instances, its nice users are being proactive to install software, so we don't want to simply force that setting off for all clients. In addition, a change control window is limited to a small time window, so adding 4 additional days to the change to account for prestaging isn't plausible.
So , let me hear your thoughts on the subject, or how you've handled this scenario. Is there a way to preventsome deployments from using the user defined computer maintenance settings?
