Uninstall, reboot, install

Have an app that cant be upgraded to new version.  I need to uninstall it, reboot, install the new version.
in the old days, back when I did this stuff, this was simple.   run the uninstall, set the runonce key to call the software install from a local dir.

With SCCM 2012, and the app deploy model, I'm told by the people running sccm now,  this isn't possible that I have to deploy an uninstall.  And deploy a install as separate actions.    That strikes me as potentially bad for the user as they may start working between the first reboot, and the software install.

has it gotten so complicated in sccm 2012?
