Application Deployment to Remote Sites

$

We are deploying Office 2013 to many PC's in our environment. Soon we will be deploying this to remote sites that have 50 - 75 PC's. We have one SCCM site server at Site A. Our remote sites are setup as distrubution points with AD boundaries. The remote sites have a site to site VPN connection that is fairly slow (10-20 mb). I am trying to figure out the best way to deploy this Office 2013 application to these remote sites without making any SCCM site configuration changes (basically using my site setup the way it is with our site server at Site A and then the remote sites being setup as distrubtition points). I currently have an application created for these remote sites but the content is pointing to a server on Site A. My question is then:

1. Would it be best to copy the Office 2013 install content to each remote site server to a file share, and then on our main sccm site, create an application and point to the content on these remote site servers for the installation files? And then of course chose the remote server as the only distribution point? My thought is by doing it this way, nothing gets copied over the site to site pipe between the main site and the remote site. Or does sccm still copy files back onto itself?

2. Or is better to keep the content on the sccm server file share, but distribute it to the remote sites distribution points? My only fear with doing it this way is it will take the connection down due to having to copy 700 mb over a 10-20 mb pipe that gets used for everything.

Hopefully my explanation makes sense...

How to create a Global Condition based on computers/users Active Directory Group?

$

Been asking this for a while now everywhere... Can't find the answer. So the problem is, how can I make a SCCM 2012 Global Condition which can be used to determine Active Directory group the User/Computer belongs to?

I was planning to use this kind of Requirement as Application deployment base, so that certain software would only be deployed to the computers which are in the software group (in the Active Directory)...

Anyone?

I can create a query to find what packages use a source location.  How can I do the same thing for application deployment types and content location?

CHanges to application not pushing out

Hi

I have a load of applications within SCCM, and they are working fine.  What i want todo is run a quick command after each one has been installed.  My plan is to add another deployment type to the application todo this.  But whenever i add another deployment type to an existing application, and i update it's content.  The changes aren't reflected.

If i view the application within the Software Center of a workstation.  It still only shows "1 component" which as far as i'm aware is the same number of deployment types for each application.

So how can i force this application to be updated?  Again, this isn't content...but adding another..."action" if you will to the application by adding another deployment type.

Hope that makes sense.

SCCM 2012 R2: automatic uninstall App-V 5 packages

Hi,

We are using App-V 5.0 SP3 for computers (in test phase) as well as Terminal Servers (in production, App-V 4.6 and 5.0 on the same W2K8R2 servers). We were thinking about using a App-V management server since SCCM integrated App-V has downsides, most important one is no automatic uninstall. Then there is this comparison which shows that integrating in SCCM has much more options: http://virtualvibes.co.uk/app-v-management-server-or-configuration-manager-2012-a-feature-comparison

So we're back at going for "SCCM App-V integrated" and the issue that uninstall doesn't happen automatically. Also there is this post which tells us "With App-V 5.0 SP2, App-V packages that are being used cannot be uninstalled." http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.be/2013/07/configmgr-2012-sp1-with-app-v-50.html

So I'm still looking for the best approach to:

*deploy App-V 5.0 packages to terminal servers via SCCM 2012 (user targetted): an uninstall won't happen for one user if another user has it in use? Then how can we enforce an uninstall/remove an application nicely?
*deploy App-V 5.0 packages to W7 computers via SCCM 2012 (first phase, later we will deploy to users on the computers): deploy an App-V package to  certain collection with computers, deploy an uninstall to "all computers" so that if computerobject isn't member of the collection, it will uninstall? Won't every user then receive loads of uninstalls triggered (even not visible in the console)?

Sound all quite messy for me.
Please advise.
J.

Kaspersky KES 8 failed to installl with SCCM

Hi guys,

Recently I've tried to install Kaspersky security endpoint protection (KES) 8.1.0.1042 latest from 8 version and its failed. The KES its built also with network agent. In some point the sccm agent receive a -1 exit code, I don't understand what mines and I search  a lot. On win 7 SCCM report that installation it's failed but Kaspersky runs difrent msi and AV it's installed. I setup SCCM to for -1 code for a soft restart. After re-evaluation SCCM find Kaspersky installed and everything its fine.

On XP 32/64 the process its same just after -1 exit code also Kaspersky its  stopped and nothing happens any more. The bad point it's if I run setup.exe /s from sccmcache its fine for all OS's. So I guess that the problem its how sccm agent handle the setup process.

The exe file its generate by KSC (kaspersky security center console) for a standalone installation.      Logs:

Content download location for Task sequence based application

I have a task sequence created for an application office 2013. I configured this to "download all contents locally before running task sequence". The report says that the donwload content is completed. But, I couldn't see the content any where on the client machine.

I verified under ccmcache, under C drive and C:\Windows.

Where would be the content download location for task sequence based application.

what is the best option while packaging a .msp file using SCCM 2012?

whether it should be packaged as an application or a package?

question what is behavior of checking and unchecking these options?

application deployment user experience settings fields like commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)  when the installation deadline is reached allow the following activities to be performed outside the maintenance window software installation and system restarts

question what is behavior of checking and unchecking these options?

When I distribute an application to a distribution point, does it not copy all actual files of the application content? I distributed an application today (Office 2013) to a remote server (slow link) and it completed pretty fast. I went onto the remote server and in the SCCMContentLib folder and I see files listed there for the app but they are very small in file size (1 kb). I was under the assumption that the actual content files would be copied. Not the case?

How does clients choose Distribution Point from a Boundary Group?

Hi We have just added another Distribution Point to a Boundary Group but the clients still get there data from the first one. I have checked in the CAS log and can see this:

Download location found 0 - http://server1.domain.com/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/e33da686-a77f-49e2-b406-49ddb9bab1c4 ContentAccess 2015-03-24 02:04:31 3828 (0x0EF4)

Download location found 1 - http://server2.domain.com/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/e33da686-a77f-49e2-b406-49ddb9bab1c4 ContentAccess 2015-03-24 02:04:31 3828 (0x0EF4)

But the clients still downloads from Server1 that was the first server in the Boundary Group. The DPs have the same Operating System, Server 2008 R2 and both are virtual. How does the client choose a Distribution Point when they are assigned two from the Boundary Group?

Compare two devices to find difference with installed applications

Hi,

In our organization we have small group of users, who has rights to install any software on their PC's. Of course, they are getting these rights only form some reason e.g. special knowledge for install or configuration specific application. Unfortunately our users use this right to install any applications. We would like to know what has been installed by them to stop them for installing e.g. computer games :-)

So... my question is: it is possible to compare standard, fresh installed PC with user device after few weeks of use that?

Thank you for any advice.

MSI Program Installs but cannot create desktop Icon

I am installing an MSI using a task sequence command line.

The program should create an icon in the C:\Users\Public\Desktop folder.

Whenever I run the program without specifying an account (Run this step as the following account) it installs correctly but it does not create the icon.

Whenever I specify the sccm domain account which has full domain administrator rights and access to this folder it fails to install the program at all UNLESS I have logged into the workstation with the sccm account, if I have already logged into the box it runs perfectly and create the icon fine...

Here is the log file of the failing install-

Office 2013 - Creating desktop shortcuts using OCT

I need to create desktop shortcuts using the Office Customization Tool. But how does one do this when they have both 32 and 64 bit machines in the environment? The "Start In" path below is obviously going to be different when dealing with 32 and 64 bit OS machines (c:\program files vs c:\program files(x86))

I'm following these directions but they look to be specific to a 64 bit machine: http://mystang69.blogspot.com/2013/08/office-customisation-tool-2013-adding.html

Supersedence in SCCM 2012

Hi,

I was hoping to get peoples input on supersedence in SCCM 2012.

In my view it seems rather backwards with how it is configured. Here is my example as to why. Very interested to see if anyone agrees or suggestions on what others are doing.

There is an application lets call it "Program A". I input a version for it in the main Application screen. I create a Deployment type and deploy it. All works well.

I now have a new version of this program. Now this is where I feel it goes backwards. In order to now deploy this update common sense to me says I should simply create a new deployment type and tell it within that that this is the updated version. I update the version number in the main application window and off I go. SCCM Automatically updates the distribution points with the new version, removing the old one and "re advertises" the current deployment to link to the new version.

However as I understand it this is what needs to happen:

  • Create a completely a "New" Application. "Program A v2" (What is the point of a version number if you need it in the name of it to ensure its unique)
  • Create a completely new deployment type.
  • Tell this new application that it supersedes the old application.

(I now have 2 applications called the same thing with a version number in the name as you cant have duplicates.)

  • Create a new deployment for "Program A v2"
  • Remove the deployment for "Program A"

I now have 2 applications for the same program.

I struggle understanding the point of this. Why even both creating a relationship between the 2 programs? Adding in the supersedence relationship actually makes the take longer.

Package stuck at Downloading 0%

Hi All,

Using SCCM 2012 SP1 CU5 to deploy applications/packages. All distribution points and boundary groups are configured and working correctly. What I've discovered is that some of the applications are stuck at downloading 0%, and software center eventually fails with "The software change returned error code 0x87D00607(-2016410105).", which is saying that the content is not available. I checked the distribution point and the content is not available. I push out the application, but it seems like it doesn't distribute it to the DP.

All DP's are VMs and running Windows 7.
