SCCM SP1 - OS Deployment with Applications

$

We have managed to install 2012 SP1 SCCM and get a few applications to install correctly (Software Center)...

We have also managed to install Windows 7 using Task Sequence.

Trying to combine the two is proving to be a problem..

We have used the option of trying to install applications as part of the task sequence on both the build and capture and deploy task sequence, however have encountered the following errors everytime...

0x8007002   (as per smsts log)

The OS will install fine, however when adding apps to the Task it fails.

See log below:

Throug Task Sequence (and what is going on as above) or through required app installs?

Problem deploying a true Windows 8 App

SCCM 2012 SP1 - I work for a school district deploying Windows 8 tablets to students too young to sign up for LiveIDs. The developers of the Win8 App "Fresh Paint" were kind enough to send me their development .appx package. Outside of Configuration Manager, I have used the powershell script that gets created with the package to "sideload" the app successfully on a Windows 8 machine.

I am now creating the application package for this app in Configuration Manager. I chose .appx as the type and selected the .appx file from the extracted .zip file contents of the app provided. Configuration Manager seems to have no problems creating the application and allowing me to select the user group I want to install the app.

On both a Windows 8 Pro computer (with the sideloading key from our software assurance) and a Windows 8 Enterprise machine, I cannot get the app to load. I select it from the Application Catalog to install, but it fails every time. I merged logs in CMTrace, and when I can see the application install starting, there is immediately an error: "In-line script returned error output: Attempting to perform the InitializeDefaultDrives operation s on the 'FileSystem' provider failed."

I am not a Powershell master (or a Configuration Manager admin), but the error appears to be Powershell, and my guess is that it is a permissions issue between the server and client. But I can't figure out exactly what the problem is.

We can get traditional windows programs (that are not Win8 .appx packages) pushed out to clients with no problems. It is the Windows 8 Apps specifically that seem to cause the problem, and we have also tried with two other Win8 app packages we received from developers.

SCCM 2012 Fails to install/push software updates and application installs

I use to have this working but I decided to install WSUS onto the same server as SCCM 2012 and in that process of me troubleshooting that issue I reinstalled IIS on the SCCM Server. I think that is what broke this link.

Needless to say I reinstalled the Application Webpoint and Web Service on the Service Role but the software updates and applications still will not install.

Here are some of the log errors I have found. I tried to research all I could but everything keeps pointing to Boundary Groups but I have had those setup already. I even deleted and recreated them hoping that would fix the issue.

EXE's wizard suppresed Windows XP in SCCM 2012 SP1

We have some older (very old) applications that are EXE's that do not have silent switches. We are still deploying these through SCCM 2012 SP1 as applications. When we deploy them to Windows 7, the typical wizard appears for us to follow the prompts and get the software installed, however on Windows XP, they don't. All EXE wizards are suppressed. Has anyone run into this issue before, or know why it differs between XP and 7? Thanks.

Is there a "Preload package" tool for SCCM 2012?

I have 200 packages on an existing SCCM 2007 secondary site. I have setup SCCM 2012 DP role on a different server, in the same AD site, as the SCCM 2007 secondary site. I want to decommission the existing 2007 secondary site server, and use the new SCCM 2012 DP for all my content in this site. I pushed out a couple small packages to the 2012 DP from the site server, but I need to get all 200 packages onto the new 2012 DP. With SCCM 2007, Preloadpkgonsite.exe would do the job very nicely for this task, but from what i have seen, that doesn't work for SCCM 2012. Is there a tool, or best practice, for moving SCCM 2007 content to a different SCCM 2012 DP, without having to send everything from the site server, across our WAN?

Any feedback regarding this is most appreciated.

someone help me how to fix this

SCCM 2012 SP1 CU1: delivery of large App-V package to client results in Insufficient memory to continue the execution of the program.

Hi,

We've got an issue where large App-V packages fail to install from the app catalog, however if you install them manually, running exactly the same command that SCCM uses the package is added without issue.  e.g.:

ErrorMessage=Insufficient memory to continue the execution of the program.FullyQualifiedError ID =System.OutOfMemoryException,Microsoft.AppV.AppvClientPowerShell.AddAppvPackageContext:Severity=WarningHostName=ConsoleHostHostVersion=3.0Host ID =96138c86-1713-4774-b231-027a57e28ad3EngineVersion=3.0Runspace ID =82791baf-5bd0-412b-af81-e4c3a3b63ae3Pipeline ID =1CommandName=Add-AppvClientPackageCommandType=CmdletScriptName=CommandPath=SequenceNumber=15User= xxx\SYSTEMShell ID =Microsoft.PowerShellUserData:

This is the command used by SCCM (from appenforce.log):

Executing Command line: "C:\\Windows\\System32\\WindowsPowerShell\\v1.0\\powershell.exe" -ExecutionPolicy Bypass import-module 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Application Virtualization\Client\AppvClient\AppvClient.psd1';  Add-AppvClientPackage -Path 'C:\Windows\ccmcache\o\MathLab MatLab r2012b_2_3.appv'  -DynamicDeploymentConfiguration 'C:\Windows\ccmcache\o\MathLab MatLab r2012b_2_3_DeploymentConfig.xml' with system context

If I open a PS command window as myself and run exactly the same command, copy and pasted from that log, there is no issue.  The app appears and is usable.

What could be the difference between SCCM executing this with the SYSTEM account causing it to run out of memory?

Thanks

Removing Optional Applications from Software Center

Consider this scenario, I Installed an optional application from the Application Catalog.  I then rebuilt my machine but no longer need that application.  I have a continuous reminder in my task tray they I have available software listing the application I no longer need.

All applications (some with required approval) are targeted to an "Application Catalog" collection which has all domain users as members.

Other than changing my targeting method, anyone know a way to remove this application as available from my Software Center?

Software Center Error

Hello,

I have one client that when launching Software Center gets "Loading Software Center returned error code 0x80041013." I have tried reinstalling the client, rebuilding the WMI repository (used both winmgmt /resetrepository and stop services renamed wbem\respository folder). The client is SCCM 2012 SP1 with CU1 (had the same problem before CU1 install, was hoping that would fix it). Anyone with any suggestions? This is one in 10 test clients that did it, but I am worried about pushing this to production clients.

Import Problem

Hi,

Having a problem with an application import.  We have App-V client 4.6 SP1 deployed and are in the process of upgrading to SP2.  We have created the SP2 application and setup to supersede the SP1 version.  When exported the option to export all linked objects was selected as per our environment requirements.

I can import this fine in my lab environment - the existing apps default to "add revision" option and all the supersedence etc works as expected.  However, in our two test environments the import is showing "create new" as the only option (no "add revision" option).  Have confirmed that the application is already in those environments, and if I proceed with the import using the "create new" option it results in a new "copy" of the old version with (2) appended, and the supersedence relationship on the new application is pointing at this "copy" rather than at the previously deployed version that we actually need to supersede.

Does anyone have experience of this kind of issue?  It looks like during the validation of the import zip file it is failing to match the contents to the DB - or is some kind of permission issue preventing updates to existing applications...

Thanks,

Stuart

Application dependency chain not completing

We have a software dependency chain that is not completing properly. We are installing SQL Management Studio 2008 R2-->SQL Mgmt Studio SP1-->Visual Studio 2010-->Visual Studio 2010 SP1. SQL Management Studio must install first due to registry errors that otherwise occur when installing SQL with VS already installed.

SQL and SQL SP1 install fine. It then takes at least another full day before the install enforcement begins on VS 2010. After this install the sequence halts again for another day or two and then VS 2010 SP1 installs. We would like this chain of installs to occur directly after each other.

We have the installs set to install whether the user is logged in or not and the software is required. VS SP1 has a dependency of VS 2010, VS 2010 has a dependency of SQL SP1, which has a dependency of SQL Mgmt Studio.

We have set the Software Deployment device setting to "Schedule re-evaluation for deployments" every 2 hours, and the clients policy polling interval is set for every 30 minutes.

If we manually kick off an Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle, it will install just fine.

Any help with streamlining this software install chain would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Uninstalling & Updating Java via TS

Hello,

I've created a task sequence with the intention of removing older versions of Java and then installing the latest version, of which I already have a working Application for.  There are three tasks in the sequence, the last of which is to install the latest version.  The first two tasks will uninstall the old versions via command-line (msiexec /x {ProductCode} /qn).  When I deploy this TS to a test collection, though, it just sits there and says 'Installing' and sits there.  I tried creating Packages and adding the command-line to that, and then adding those Packages to the TS but I get the same results.

If I check smsts.log I do not see anything recent.

If I check execmgr.log I get these:

OnContentAvailable invalid request GUID handle execmgr4/29/2013 11:16:05 AM2692 (0x0A84)
IMaintenanceCoordinator::RequestTaskStart Failed with error code 0x80041033execmgr4/29/2013 12:00:40 PM1636 (0x0664)
Failed to serialize the SWD job with Maintanent Task Coordinator. Error code 80041033execmgr4/29/2013 12:00:40 PM1636 (0x0664)

Could not find the policy in WMI for package PSD0004C program *execmgr4/29/2013 12:01:08 PM2700 (0x0A8C)

I checked 'Content Status' and found that package 'PSD0004C' is a Boot Image, but I am not specifying a Boot Image in this TS because I wish for it to just run applications in the OS.

I've already verified that the Java Update Application works on its own, so the content and syntax is right for that.

Any ideas?  Or is there a better way to accomplish this?  Versions 1.7 of Java overwrite each other when there is an update, but version 1.6 remains.

Project & Visio 2010 Uninstallation - SCCM 2012 SP1

I am trying to uninstall Project and Visio 2010 x86 in order to install Office 2013 x64. I have been able to create an Application that will successfully install and uninstall Office 2010 x86 but the same method will not work for Project& Visio. Lets take Project for example:

I have made an alternate config.xml for for uninstalling and specified it under "Uninstall program" using: "setup.exe" /Uninstall PrjPro.WW /config "PrjPro.WW\configUninstall.xml"

I have also tried:  Msiexec.exe /X {90140000-003B-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

I keep getting this error for Project with the first set of parameters: (AppEnforce.log)

I have tried reinstalling the entire OS as well as the Visio and Project and still nothing. I am able to run both these commands locally and they work. My configUninstall.xml has the correct parameters as well:<Display Level="none" CompletionNotice="no" SuppressModal="yes" AcceptEula="yes" />

I have even tried writing a script that ran as an Application & also a Package to no avail as well. I am running everything as the domain administrator with UAC off and no firewall on. The local caches of the Application's packages are correct and up to date as well.

Multiple Application, same source ?

Hi!

I am about to deploy Office 2013 and I specify what features that should be installed with XML-files. I want three different applications that share the same source files. One for Word, PW, Excel and Outlook, one for Access and one for Lync. With packages i could just create one package with multiple programs but that does not work now with deployment types.

The question is, will there be a problem with packages sharing the same source?

I know that it will only be stored once at the DPs but it is the application source i think about.

It just feels wrong to store the same sourcefiles multiple times when the only thing that differs is a couple of XML-files.

Do you see any problems with this approach?

Issue Pre-Deploying App-V 5.0 Applications to Users using SCCM SP1

Well, let me start this off by saying that hopefully I'm doing something wrong...

What I'm looking to achieve is to Install some App-V sequenced applications to some users Primary Devices before the user logs in, but to also have these applications be usable by anyone and everyone that might come along later and use this same computer.

That's all easy enough with regular applications in SCCM, but I'm running into issues doing this with App-V applications.

I've noticed that if I just make an App-V application "Available" to a user and they go to the Application Catalog and install it, then what I get is an application that installs into the profile specific AppData directory and then that application is not available to anyone else on that machine.

If I deploy an Application and target the computer instead, then the same App-V application will install into the ProgramData directory and everyone that comes along can use this application (this is fine, but I really want to target users and not computers).

So what I tried next was to Deploy the application to a user and make it a "Required" application and to also set it to "pre-deploy" to the users primary device as seen in the image below.

However, when I do this...what I'm seeing now is that the application installs in BOTH locations.  If the user has never logged in, the application will install in only the ProgramData directory which makes it available to the machine. Then when they do login, SCCM decides that it also needs to isntall the application to the user...and it does (giving them double desktop icons). Or if they are logged in when the install happens then it goes ahead and installs to both locations at the same time (again with double desktop icons).

So...how do I resolve this?

As stated, I want the app on the machine, but only once and I prefer to target users. Can this be done with an App-V application?

Distribute application - use global condition to check for presence of running process?

Hello!

Our environment:

SCCM 2012

  • Windows 7 x86 and x64 clients (deployed using OSD)
  • Applications deployed as part of TS or built-in to captured wim.

We have a line of business application update which we would like to deploy to our client machines. We are happy that deployment of applications using both the SCCM Software Center and the Application Catalog are working as expected.

My pondering: If I wanted to deploy this update ASAP and I wanted to ensure that a client machine was only going to initiate the installation if a certain process (eg Excel.exe) was NOT running, can I somehow build this into the deployment using built-in SCCM functionality?

I came across this - Allow the user to postpone installation  (awesome work again Mr Nilsson)

I dont specifically need to allow user postponement (even though this would do what we need perfectly), but I do need to ensure that if the install was made mandatory, that it will not initiate if a particular process is found to be running.

I realise that this also raises the issue of how often the deployment would re-evaluate for the presence of the process and that it might fail to install after finding it could not proceed after finding the process running....

(I was thinking of setting this deployment to only run when a user is not logged on - which solves the headache of having to check for a running process, and I know the install msi will happily run this way).

Any thoughts appreciated - I guess its a bit of "non" issue, but might be useful to know how for the future.

EDIT - presently looking at using global condition with WMI to evaluate running processes...

Application Catalog Icons not always loading

Hi All,

We have deployed around 24 applications to the application catalog on our Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 server.

We have configured it to show links to documentation, descriptions, icons etc but with some applications it is not showing the icons.

There is no common denominator to the applications that do not show their icons, they are different application types (App-v and MSI), different icon sizes and pixels.

I have also tried copying the icons to the server and adding from there but does not work.

What is interesting though is that when you install the program to the computer it does appear in software centre.

Has anyone else run into this? How have you fixed it?

SCCM 2012 Run a vbscript

I've tried to piece together other posts on this topic but have yet to successfully do this.  Could someone please provide a step by step on how to run a vbscript with SCCM 2012 SP1?  Please be as detailed as possible, because I would like to understand the nuances of why a certain setting is being set and why certain selections are being selected.

I've tried many different settings but haven't found the correct combination or something.  If it matters, the vbscript copies a file from a network share available to everyone and also creates a shortcut to the company intranet site.  Everything tests out locally, but just cannot get this to work via SCCM 2012 SP1.  This is what I have to work.

Please just post a how to with as much detail as possible.  THANKS!!!
