SCCM - Lenovo System Update

$

0

Hi Guys,

I am currently deploying a OSD for my company via SCCM.

Lenovo laptops will be the target and I wished to install "ThinkVantage System Update".

I have deployed 10+ different applications ranging from exe, msi to CTR (office 365) but I cant get this one working.

Working so far:

Installation program: systemupdate506-04-24-2014.exe /VERYSILENT

I could get the program to install but it always return as failed.

Note: Lenovo only offers exe installer.

AppEnforce Logs:

Process 1816 terminated with exitcode: 0

Looing for exit code 0 in exit codes table...

matched exit code 0 to a Success entry in exist codes table

Performing detection of app deployment ...

Application no discovered

Detection Method:

I have tried detection method from registry to file to vbscript to powershell... nothing worked so far

I would like to stick to File Detection since this always worked out for my other "exe" in sccm

The System Update program is installed under C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\tvsu.exe

My attempted detection rules are:

%ProgramFiles%\Lenovo\System Update - folder detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit clicked

%ProgramFiles%\Lenovo\System Update - folder detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit not clicked

%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Lenovo\System Update - folder detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit clicked

%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Lenovo\System Update - folder detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit not clicked

%ProgramFiles%\Lenovo\System Update\tvsu.exe - file detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit clicked

So far they all came back with the same result, software installed but software center said failed.

Additional Finding:

I tried installed the program manually, and open up software center and press install for a application with the following detection method:

%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Lenovo\System Update\tvsu - file detection - assoc. 32bit to 64bit not clicked

The result was instant installed.

So I assume the silent install took place after the detect method ?!?!?!

I been trying to get this working for the last two days and ran out of ideas.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Passing username to script run under system context

$
0
0
I have been banging my head against a wall on trying to automate a local admin rights assignment process and am probably too close to the issue and hope that some here might might have some insight that can help.

Right now the current manual process is:
(I know that this isn't ideal, but unfortunately it is what we have)
* User puts in request
* Users manager approves request
* IT Admin approves
* IT Admin adds PC to filter group (prevents AD from stripping out non-approved local admins)
* Wait for replication to occur (no clue how long this takes, am also planning on working on a script that will check all domain controllers)
* add user to local admin
* refresh local policy (if user is removed add them again)
    * if user is removed a 2nd time, request the user reboots the PC
    * add them again and refresh policy (this should be the end)

The biggest issue I currently have right now, especially as we have a large mobile workforce, is one of timing.  By the time we get to the part of adding the user to the local admin group the PC may be offline and it could take a while before we see it again.  And it is a manual process to check if PC is online or not.

OK, with all that said, I have tried several things and my main issue is how to tie the approved username to the PC.  Is there a way to pass the primary user (UDA) of a PC to the script that adds to the local admin group?

Options I have looked at and / or tested so far are:
Collection - Based on the filter group (all the below will use the same device collection)

Unless otherwise noted, all applications need to run under the system context so that the username can be added to the local admin group.

Application - A script that is deployed against the above collection that adds the current user to the local admin group (use LastLoggedonSamUser from registry)

OR

Application - A script that is deployed against the above collection that reads the computer AD description and adds the user(s) listed there to the local admin group (this has been tested).  Additionally I can read from a tag file on the PC or on the network.

OR

Compliance settings - 2 scripts, 1 to check for compliance, that current user is in admin group and 1 to add current user to admin group.  I have tested it and was successful checking for compliance but haven't got the 2nd script working yet, but this still has the issue that I need to tie the approved username to the pc and only add the approved user.

Not tested, but did something similar at a previous job but this was only adding users to remote desktop
2 scripts: (script 2 is a dependency on script one)
1) deploy to user, it checks if current user is in admin group
2) adds current user to local admin group

Additionally, I have the issue of requiring a reboot to make sure that the policy is no longer applied and while many times all it takes is switching from wired to wireless, requesting a reboot is normally the easiest thing to have a user do.  So, with that in mind (and again while I was typing this up) I thought of adding a 2nd script as a dependency to all the above and that all this script did was prompt the user (hopefully the correct user) to reboot and returned to SCCM a required Hard reboot, which if I am not mistaken, would prevent the first script from running until a reboot has been performed.

Pretty much all of the options have the issue of only adding the approved user to the correct PC.

SCCM 2012 R2 and 2012 R2 RDS role (remoteapp)

How do I integrate 2012 R2 RDS and SCCM 2012 R2? Seems like a basic thing, use SCCM to deploy traditional, App-V and...  RemoteApp??

I've been searching the forums and the TechNet Library but I'm coming up empty...  Please reply with any links or other info you may have.  I need to throw together a demo for management before the budget is set for 2015 soon... :)

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Application and Package Deployment - Metered Connection (Mobile Broadband) - "Preparing download"

SCCM 2012 R2 Platform.

The clients we're concerned with at the moment have been built using SCCM 2012 with a Window 8.1 Enterprise image. They're tablet devices which will be field based and heavily reliant on Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband connectivity, all are 3G capable.

We utilise DirectAccess for management, EndPoint Protection updates and adhoc software deployment.

We've come to test software deployment over a mobile broadband (metered) connection. We've created a simple 'package' to start with and it's failing to deploy. The sequence of events are best described below:

  1. We've adjusted the client policy in order metered connections are allowed
  2. We've ensured the clients have a suitable firewall rule-set as recommended for SCCM communication
  3. Unlike 'applications' there are no deployment options in relation to 'metered connections'
  4. On the client the deployment is available in the Software Center and once we click install, the dialog jumps to downloading and then quickly to "Preparing Download". This is where it sits, it doesn't appear to time out at all
  5. We've checked the client logs and there no obvious errors or clues as to what's happening (execmgr and the SCCM deployment status say waiting for content. The CCMCACHE directory has been created and a 0KB file has appeared but is getting no bigger

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

User Notification & Options During Software Deployment

$

Good Afternoon All -

While testing the deployment of a software package on my new SCCM 2012 installation, I saw a popup appear in the bottom right by the system tray of the client test computer.  When clicking on it, the Software Center opened giving me a few details about different stages of the deployment.

This is great for testing deployments, but could be extremely confusing when trying to silently update a package... like a new version of an app... silently in the background if ever needed during the workday.

Are there any options for disabling these notifications, software center visibility, or other suggestions?

Thanks!

Superceeding Appv application using download and execute

$

Hi,

We are using SCCM 2012 sp1 cu2 and Windows 7 on the client. We just have the on SCCM server and multiple DPs, which are delivering Appv 4.6 sp2 applications to the client. We are targeting user install by making it available for them to install and have the application load into cache before installing.

I created the new appv app and selected the old one to be superceed, and I left the uninstall unticked, (The old App didn't work so it's not an upgrade, but should be a replace)

I then added the user to the targeted AD group and it appeared in the Application Catalog, so I installed it. This all went fine and the installation went through without problems. However, when I looked at the properties of the shortcuts in appv manager and the registry, they were pointing to the old application cahe, with any extra shortcuts pointing to the sccm cache for the new application.

So it didn't really do what I wanted it to do which is repoint all shortcuts to the new applications cache location, (which makes sense since I am using download and execute and I should have chosen to uninstall the previous version first).

So the new deployment seems to be in a bit of a mess now according to SCCM, since the older version seems to have taken over the properties of the new application for uninstalls and reinstalls.

I've managed to remove the application and taken the user out of the AD group, so it doesn't appear in Application Catalog or on the start menu any more, but it does still appear in Software Catalog as an available install. Also when I logon to the machine I get a notification that there is available software to install (which would be the case).

How can I remove this from the Software Catalog since it is no longer made available for this user?  - neither the old or new app is associated to the user any more (I can click on install and it will install the app successfully).

In future I will definately tick the uninstall box!

also if I did want to do an upgrade in future to replace one appv with an updated version, would I be able to do this by leaving the superceeded uninstall unticked and should the shortcuts all point to the new cache location (didn't work as above, but since this is replacing a new appv app with one that didn't work, then the version numbers in the osd file are the same), or is there something the appv osd file should contain which says it is an upgraded app?, or doesn't the upgrade option work with Appv 4.6 and is fixed in Appv 5?)

Thanks

Silent install of Photoshop Elements 10 via SCCM fails

$

Hi all, hoping someone can help. I'm trying to push out deployment of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 via SCCM. From Adobe's site I found details on adding an XML file to preconfigure various default settings and perform a silent install.  I can push out the package to my test PC's cache folder no problem, but the advertisement fails with "Failed (bad environment)" message ID 10003. The system cannot find the file specified."

However, I can install the program manually, running the same code from the command line. So, on my test PC, if I go to c:\windows\system32\cache\(package) from the command line, I can type the following "start /wait Setup.exe /UL1033 /V"SERIALNUMBER=xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx" (as per Adobe's instructions) and Photoshop Elements 10 will silently install just fine.

I've read elsewhere that SCCM can have issues with server paths and making use of the %~dp0 variable but I'm unsure if that applies here. In SCCM, in the program properties for PE10, the drive mode is set to "Runs with UNC name." I tried changing to 'requires drive letter" but it still failed. I'm guessing I'm dealing with some sort of environment issue but I'm stuck as to how to fix. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Streaming App-V application using SCCM 2012 R2 fails

Hello - I have a SCCM 2012 R2 environment setup and running great.

There are a number of App-V applications that have been packaged and to SCCM, and they deploy successfully to the targeted systems as long as the Deployment option on the App-V package is "Download content from the Distribution Point and run locally"

(The App-V Sequencer and App-V client are the latest Version 5.0 SP2 with Hotfix 4 applied)

If the Deployment option is changed to "Stream content from distribution point" the deployment will fail.

The error displayed in the Software Center is: "The software change returned error code 0x87D0128F (-2016406897)."

How do I prevent items from showing up under "Available Software" in the software center after they have been removed?

I have some scenarios where I want to keep older or multiple versions of an application around in the Application Catalog website. The problem is when I deploy a script to remove one of these applications after removal it starts to appear under "Available Software" in the Software Center. Our users have noticed this and discovered that they can go there, select the application and reinstall it. I need to find a way to prevent this. Is there some sort of setting I can enable to prevent certain applications from showing up under "Available Software" but still have them listed in the Application Catalog Website?

SCCM and use App-V Shared Content Mode.

Hello,

I am trying to use SCCM 2012 R2 with App-V 5.0 SP2 HF4 to use the Shared Content Store.
The App-V client is installed with the sharedcontentstoremode=1. When i deploy the app-v application with SCCM the content still hits the local disk of the client (streaming/Downloading). Is it just not possible to use the shared content store mode with SCCM app-v application deployment or do i need to set some extra registry settings? I am unable to find any documentation that explains the way to configure SCCM/APP-v to use the Shared Content Store. The documenation i find is only related to the Full App-v infrastructure.

Content Distribution problem

having a bizarre problem and not sure where to even look for logs/solutions of this problem.

I try to distribute a package to the DP (I'm running a single primary server) and it "succeeds" but doesn't actually do anything. The monitoring section doesn't show it as distributing/distributed.

If I tell it to distribute again, it appears as if I never even tried to distribute it.

Any ideas?

Need help with running report on Application Last Used - outside of software metering

$

I'm trying to run a SQL query for the last time a specific application was run on specific machines. However, I keep getting multiple variations of the Name of the workstation.

Basically, I'm looking for when was the last (most recent) time an application was run by workstation. Here's what I have so far:

SELECT Name0, ProductName0, LastUsedTime0

FROM
v_GS_CCM_RECENTLY_USED_APPS, v_GS_SYSTEM

WHERE ProductName0 like '%APPNAME%'

GROUP BY Name0, ProductName0, LastUsedTime0

ORDER BY Name0

How can I get distinct Name0 fields so that I only get the last time it was run on each machine? And I only need the most recent date, not every time it was run.

I'm going straight to the DB because Software Metering was just turned on, but we need data as far back as we can go.

Any help would be MUCH preferred.

Thanks!
