Task Sequence Questions

$
0
0

If 1 step of the task sequence fails, and we did not have the option checked to continue on fail - will the client PCs in the assigned collection ever attempt to run the task sequence again if we have it set to required? We have since gone back and fixed a few small issues with the task sequence, but we're wondering if a system will ever check again to run that task sequence step it failed on?

Second question - We have our task sequence set up so that it installs / uninstalls 5 applications, then restarts the system, and finally writes a registry key after the PC gets back to logged-on state.  This would be perfect if we didn't have McAfee encryption on our PCs.  We need users to physically log in past the encryption, but not into the system, to get the PC to a logged-in state so that the final piece of the task sequence can finish.  If we push this overnight, and the maximum allowed run time of the task sequence expires, will the task sequence fail or does that number only refer to a client logged-in time?

Thanks!

SCCM 2012 R2 SP1: Application Deployment - Past Due - Will be "Retried"

Hi All,

I am trying to deploy Intel WIDI driver as a "Required" application. the  user experience settings are:

Installation Behavior: Install for System if Resource is device;otherwise install for user

Login Requirements: Only when a user is logged on

when the application is deployed to the clients, the installation status goes to: Past Due - Will be "Retried"

however, if i go in Software Center and manually "Retry" on the installation, it installs successfully. but this is not the desired outcome i want.

i have set the deployment schedule slightly in the past (because someone suggested that can fix the issue) but it didn't help either.

Run a Package that contains only a command and no files

There has to be a simple answer to this and I am missing it.

Here is what I want to run:

MsiExec.exe /X{89F4137D-6C26-4A84-BDB8-2E5A4BB71E00} /qn

Really all I need to do is run this command on a remote machine.  Is there actually any files in the package?  I would think no.  Correct me if I am wrong.  If it does not contain any files, how do I run the above command on the remote machine utilizing SCCM packaging or applications?  Please advise...

Do I have to create a file something.bat and place this command in it?  If so, when I kick off the bat file, does it execute from the ccmcache folder, the temp directory .. or somewhere else?

App-V 4.5 in SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 - CU3

I have a client current running SCCM 2007 with App-V 4.5 applications.  We need to upgrade to SCCM 2012 Sp1 or newer so we can support some Linux/Unix systems.

The documentation I'm seeing online is a little confusing.  Older versions of CM12 could support 4.5 Can anyone confirm if SCCM 2012 R2 Sp1 will support App-V 4.5?  or do the App-V need to be upgraded to 4.6 or newer?

This page implies you must have 4.6 or newer  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822982.aspx#BKMK_Supp  but there is also documentation for Cm2012 that mentioned App-V 4.5.  I suspect that version may not be supported, but I'm not sure if it's actually been deprecated so it wont work.  I'm just trying to figure out if I'm going to have to repackage my App-V apps prior to migration.

Thanks!

Packages not Distributing to Secondary Servers

Hi All

I have around 10 packages that are not distributing to the 3 of my secondary servers.  The error below is the same I receive for each package.  Bizarrely, some applications distribute fine to the SS's while others have an issue.

The DP's have access to the content, there is enough disk space and the files names are short. I've trawled through all the suggestions on the posts within TechNet but I still can't get the packages to distribute.

The error message received in the console is the same:

Any advice gratefully received!

We are deploying AppV 5 packaged applications using SCCM (1602).  The applications are deployed to All Users and the users then choose those they want from the Software Center.

This works for the majority of our users, but strangely not all.

For those it doesn't work for on their first attempt to install an app it returns an error code (80004005) and this can be seen in AppDiscovery.log...

On the same PC a different user is able to install the same AppV applications without issue.

On second attempts to install Software Center shows Installing for forever, unless changing the screen by selecting a different application, where it changes back toInstall

I can't figure out why this is not working for those with issues, and can't find any answers from searching the web, so am hoping someone has some ideas on things I can check.

Application Installation not Started

I have a ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 environment. Clients are unable to install applications from the catalogue.

The appenforce.log and appdiscovery.logs are not written when attempting to install from the catalogue.

I did find information in the configmgrsoftwarecatalog.log on the client.

Also, on the CM server the serviceportalwebservice.log is written to when I attempt to install apps from the catalogue.

I believe this to be a SQL issue but I'm not familiar enough with SQL to know what troubleshooting steps to take. Any suggestions out there?

method invocation failed because does not contain a method named substring

I am trying to write a form that retires applications in sccm.

The only problem left is that I also want to remove the software on a shared location, but the application name and the software foldername is a bit different. Thje software name is for example TEST_ADB_READER_11_01 but the folder names are always the same except for the _01. So I added this to the script:

#move the software directory

   $ShortRApp = ([string]$RetiringApp.Substring(0,$RetiringApp.length-3))
            try {
            Move-Item -Path \\servername\CMContent\Software\$ShortRApp -Destination \\servername\CMContent\Software\Retired
            } catch { }
Update-Log "Moved Files to Retired folder"

The result is always method invocation failed because does not contain a method named substring....

Any ideas are appreciated

WMI getting Application needing Reboot

Hi

I want to apply this automated update deployment task sequence like in this examples:

http://luke.geek.nz/win/windows-update-task-sequence-patching-sccm-2012-r2/

http://www.toolzz.com/?p=1059

http://www.dptechjournal.net/2014/04/weekly-lab-patching-task-sequence.html

But instead of rebooting 4 times even if no more updates are needed I want to add a "Condition" that will reboot only if needed.

I can test if updates reboots are needed with "WMI Query Condition" like this:

root\ccm\ClientSDK

SELECT * FROM CCM_SoftwareUpdate WHERE EvaluationState = 8 OR EvaluationState = 9 OR EvaluationState = 10

But this apply only to updates and not applications, if I try to do the same thing for application the query fails:

root\ccm\ClientSDK

SELECT * FROM CCM_Application WHERE EvaluationState = 9 OR EvaluationState = 13 OR EvaluationState = 14

Powershell error:

get-wmiobject -query 'SELECT * FROM CCM_Application WHERE EvaluationState = 13' -namespace 'ROOT\ccm\ClientSDK'
Get-WmiObject : Provider is not capable of the attempted operation

WBEMTEST error:

SELECT * FROM CCM_Application WHERE EvaluationState = 13

Number: 0x80041024 Facility: WMI Description: Provider is not capable of the attempted operation

Please help

Gathering Program Information via Power shell

Hi,

In our SCCM 2012 environment ,  "Requirements" of  few programs are limited to "Windows 8.1 & Windows 10" platforms.

I would like to generate a report about "each programs and its requirements" .

I am using power-shell feature of SCCM for generating the reports.

CMDLET is   Get-CMProgram -ProgramName  Winrar | Select SupportedOperatingSystems

The  "Requirements"  field {SupportedOperatingSystems} of the report is giving the common name "Win NT"  for platforms like Windows XP, Windows 7, 8,10,2012 etc..

Is there any options are available to  generate the report with "full name" of the selected platforms.

Thanks in advance,

JG

Deploy Application that requires other apps to be closed.

I have done traditional SCCM deployments.  I'm now experimenting with SCCM 2012 Application Deployment.

I am trying to determine how this will work if the application you want to deploy depends on another application to be closed?  For instance, I am deploying an application that requires Outlook to be closed.

Since Outlook is open during the majority of a person working session, then there needs to be some way to meet this requirement.  How is this achieved?

What actually happens when you 'distribute content?'

$

I just solved a problem I was having with a package in a very strange way, and it prompted me to search for any technical details about what operations are performed when you click on 'distribute content.'

Briefly, the problem was with a package I was trying to deploy for Firefox. The content consisted of the Firefox installer and several text files for customizing it (using a .cmd script as the actual installer).

I had deployed this package for several older versions of Firefox, but when I came to do the latest one I kept getting the error "Failed to find ccm_SoftwareDistribution object for AdvertiD" during OSD (it also would not deploy directly to a collection, it was like it was invisible to the client).

After much trial and error, I determined that the five text files (.js, .css, .ini) were somehow not being distributed correctly since when I removed them from the package the OSD task sequence ran fine. I solved the problem by creating new text files with the same name as the originals and copy/pasting their contents.

Why did this work? What happens when you distribute content? All I can find from some searching is that the source files you specify in a package get copied to the distribution point (in this case, I have a single site with the site server acting as the distribution point). Does this mean the contents of the folder I keep all of my source files in gets replicated somewhere else on the hard drive?

When you distribute content, do the files get registered in the SQL database or is there an attribute store somewhere which would recognize copies of these files but not new files with the same name/permissions?

And one final question, are packages deployed to clients via HTTP? The properties of the distribution point seem to indicate that but I haven't actually come across any specific documentation stating it (though I haven't really looked).

Deployments Stuck "In Progress" other Have Some Success, But Not 100%

$

I have a few different Applications/Packages that I have created and am having a wide array of different issues resulting. I have some deployments that show 0% compliant and are all yellow still sitting "In Progress'. There are other deployments that have a combination of some yellow, some green(successful), and others that flat fail (in red). Then there are other deployments that are all gray for Unknown. I am new to SCCM and now lost. Once I feel I have on solution figured out, I find that it may have solved one issue it didn't resolve others, etc....

The question(s) I am having is how do I determine what the actual problem could be?  On a deployment that is all yellow, I can assume there is something going on with the deployment or app/pkg itself.  On the one that has a combination of multiple colors, I can assume the package or application is working, but not getting to all the clients. The unknown, still is in the works, as I am focusing on getting the "in Progress" and "Some Progress" deployments completely working.

I have reviewed some of the logs and find very little as to errors (from what I can tell). Again, I am a novice at this and its proving to be a pretty big challenge to grasp the troubleshooting side of SCCM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

SCCM not distributing all Application content to device

$

Hello,

I have an non-MSI based application package I created in SCCM 2012 R2 that isn't working properly. The application is Respondus Lockdown Browser 2.0.10. I am updating this application from it's previous version, which used a slightly different method of silent installation, but I've gotten past that point. I am using two batch files to Install/Uninstall the program (you have to run the setup.exe against a file that you create when you do a "Recorded Install") that work perfectly. HOWEVER, for some reason, SCCM will not deploy the Uninstall batch file to the destination device.

In case that didn't make sense, basically I install the program through the Software Center, then when I attempt to Uninstall it using the "Uninstall" button in Software Center it fails. I found the reason (I believe, I get an Invalid Executable File error in the AppEnforce log on the Uninstall batch file) is that the Uninstall batch file, as well as the Recorded Install file that the Uninstall batch file uses, are not being copied to the %windir%\ccmcache\APPNUMBER folder on the destination device. All of the other necessary installation files are there, but for some reason SCCM is not copying these two files to the local device.

If I manually copy the Uninstall batch and the .iss file (the Recorded Install file) to that same folder, THEN click Uninstall in Software Center, it works like a dream. So, it seems to be working, but for some reason SCCM does not want to send those two files (out of many, and these files are in the same Content folder as everything else, including the Install batch file) to the device. Has anyone encountered this? I've tried redistributing the package even though those two files have been in that Content directory since the creation of the new package, to no avail... not quite sure what else to try. If anyone could help me I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks!

Detection Not Working?

Hello friends, this is my first post after years of reading posts I am finally stumped lol. Perhaps someone might have seen this issue before...

Here's what's going on. I have a powershell script that does a very customized installation. It is an Application in SCCM with a detection method of a few registry keys. I have tested the script several times on a test machine and it works fine. If i want to make the script download and run again, I clear the ccmcache, remove the registry key that should be detected and the software center downloads the content and runs it again.

i just deployed this same application to about 60 computers. Over the next couple of days, the deployment report shows that over 60% of the computers are "already compliant". The others installed with no problems. This is not possible because the detection method looks for a custom registry key that is created by the powershell script. i connected to several PCs to find that the registry key was not even there at all, yet software center says that application is "installed". Whats really strange is that the appdiscovery log lacks any reference to the application. i've tried reinstalling the CCMEXEC client. I've tried deleting and redeploying the application. I've tried running deleting the cache and the appdiscovery log, rerunning the application eval cycle. the log gets recreated. no reference to the application. all the while, the software center shows the application is installed. And the script has never even run once.

Baffled.  Thanks.

Error 0x800705b4 Failed to locate content

We have an issue with big application download through BITS to DWAN clients. It contain single file about 350MB in size. About 10% of clients end up with error 0x800705b4 Failed to locate content. Other applications with smaller download sizes show about 1% of such errors.
Boundaries set by AD Sites. DPs is assigned to boundary groups.
All distribution points contain needed content and it accessible through HTTP.
We have strict BITS policy that allow only ~200kbps download per client to prevent DWAN high load.
We have successes and errors from same client physical LAN locations without visible reason. Download starts over and over and always fail on same clients.
Updating content on DP doesn`t help to solve problem. Revision change visible on clients, download result stays same - error.
At this point we can`t make local DPs in clients proximity because of star network topology with little clients in each location.
