App-V 5 "autoinstall" Apps

Hello,

we deploy our App-V 5 Apps with the SCCM 2012 SP1. Now i want that the user should only click on the desktop icons to stream the App, without install the App in the Client Software Center. Like streaming in the full App-V infrastructure.

Can we do it with SCCM?

Thanks

Deployments - Checking DP in use and cancellign the deployment

Hi,

I have a package I've deployed which is basically copying 10gb's of data (only three large files though). How can I check that the cleints are downloading the data from the correct DP? Is it one of the LocationServices, DataTransferServices, ContentTransferManager? I can only see .ini files on the DP in question rather than the whole amount of data?

Also, if the deployment only reaches (downloads) 50% and then the user closes the laptop does that mean the deployment fails and has to start again or is the data preserved?

Also, if the deployment is using the wrong DP how can I kill the deployment? If I click on cancel it doesn't let me as it's a required deployment. I've deleted the deployment on the SCCM server but the job is still running. A reboot of the clients then stops the job I think - bit messy though.

Cheers,

Issue Pre-Deploying App-V 5.0 Applications to Users using SCCM SP1

Well, let me start this off by saying that hopefully I'm doing something wrong...

What I'm looking to achieve is to Install some App-V sequenced applications to some users Primary Devices before the user logs in, but to also have these applications be usable by anyone and everyone that might come along later and use this same computer.

That's all easy enough with regular applications in SCCM, but I'm running into issues doing this with App-V applications.

I've noticed that if I just make an App-V application "Available" to a user and they go to the Application Catalog and install it, then what I get is an application that installs into the profile specific AppData directory and then that application is not available to anyone else on that machine.

If I deploy an Application and target the computer instead, then the same App-V application will install into the ProgramData directory and everyone that comes along can use this application (this is fine, but I really want to target users and not computers).

So what I tried next was to Deploy the application to a user and make it a "Required" application and to also set it to "pre-deploy" to the users primary device as seen in the image below.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

However, when I do this...what I'm seeing now is that the application installs in BOTH locations.  If the user has never logged in, the application will install in only the ProgramData directory which makes it available to the machine. Then when they do login, SCCM decides that it also needs to isntall the application to the user...and it does (giving them double desktop icons). Or if they are logged in when the install happens then it goes ahead and installs to both locations at the same time (again with double desktop icons).

So...how do I resolve this?

As stated, I want the app on the machine, but only once and I prefer to target users. Can this be done with an App-V application?

How to edit canned SCCM 2012 reports with @UserSIDS parameter?

I want to add a User Name field to the Software 02D - Computers with specific software installed report like in this post for SCCM 2007: Add user name column to Asset Intelligence Software 02D canned report

When I add in username0 to the SQL Query and refresh the fields I get a Define Query Parameters popup about the @UserSIDS parameter name wanting a value.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Do I set it to a value or disable it? My SQL query is this with the one added line in bold:

 if (@SoftwarePropertiesHash = N'%' OR @SoftwarePropertiesHash = N'')
  begin
  select @SoftwarePropertiesHash = NULL
  end
  if(@CollectionID = N'')
  begin
  select @CollectionID = NULL
  end
  SELECT DISTINCT
  MEMB.Netbios_Name0 AS [Computer Name],
v_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM_Alias.Manufacturer0 AS [Computer Manufacturer], v_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM_Alias.UserName0 AS [User Name],
  v_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM_Alias.Model0 AS [Computer Model],
  v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.ProductName0 AS [Product Name],
 v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.ProductID0 AS [Product ID],
 v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.CM_DSLID0 as [DSL ID],
 ISNULL(v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.InstallType0, 0) as [Installation Type]
 FROM fn_rbac_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE(@UserSIDs) v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias
  INNER JOIN
  (
   select v_R_System_Valid_Alias.ResourceID, v_R_System_Valid_Alias.Netbios_Name0 from fn_rbac_R_System_Valid(@UserSIDs) v_R_System_Valid_Alias
 INNER JOIN fn_rbac_FullCollectionMembership(@UserSIDs) v_FullCollectionMembership_Alias ON v_FullCollectionMembership_Alias.ResourceID = v_R_System_Valid_Alias.ResourceID
 where v_FullCollectionMembership_Alias.CollectionID = @CollectionID
  )MEMB on MEMB.ResourceID = v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.ResourceID
  LEFT JOIN fn_rbac_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM(@UserSIDs) v_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM_Alias on v_GS_COMPUTER_SYSTEM_Alias.ResourceID = MEMB.ResourceID
  where
  (@SoftwarePropertiesHash IS NULL OR v_GS_INSTALLED_SOFTWARE_Alias.SoftwarePropertiesHash0 = @SoftwarePropertiesHash)
  Order by MEMB.Netbios_Name0 ASC
Basically how do I add the username field to existing reports?

Display a command prompt to user during Application install in SCCM 2012

I'm trying to deploy Java as an application in SCCM 2012, I'm using Application rather than packages so it will periodically check to make sure it is installed rather than rely on the error/success code reported by the original install.

In order to successfully install Java, Java processes must be killed as well as all browsers must be closed which is why I chose to deploy using a command prompt that will accomplish this as well as kick off the Java MSI.  I need the install to take place regardless of whether the user is logged in or not.  If the user is logged in I want to be able to notify the user (currently done via the command prompt) that their browsers (if open) will be closing due to the install.

The problem I'm running into is that the command prompt (batch file) runs as the System user and the current logged in user can't see it and is thus not aware their browsers will be closed or the Java process will be terminated.  I realize that I could change the User Experience to "Install for User' and it may display the command prompt but they I'm restricted to only installing the update when a user is logged in which only gets some of the computers that need the update.

Any thoughts on how I can display the instructions to the user via Command Prompt before the install takes place?

App-V 5 Client Install

I created a VBscript to install all the dependencies for App-V 5 Client and this works fine. I am now testing doing it via the Application with Dependencies, but I find two specific problems - I was following the Deployment guys article http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgr_geek_speak/archive/2013/04/23/getting-started-with-app-v-5-0-using-configuration-manager-2012.aspx

1. Created two dependencies for Powershell 3.0 and Net Framework 4. I find that even with Net Framework set as the first dependency appenforce.log shows it always trying to install Powershell 2506143 first which duly fails because it won't install without Framework present. I changed the Powershell application itself to have Net Framework as a dependency and that fixes the problem but I don't understand why the dependency order is not honoured i.e. Framework first and Powershell second

2. Powershell exits 3010 reboot required and appv_client_setup.exe fails because it considers Powershell to not be present. Do a manual reboot and it installs fine

So how can you get it all to run in one application. The vbscript I created previously calls all the dependencies in turn (including the C++) and also runs the app-v msi file (x86 or x64) and that is ok

Uninstalling App-V 5.X virtual environment in SCCM 2012 SP1

Hi,

I have an appv 5 application which is dependent on another Appv 5 application. I have created Virtual environment using SCCM 2012 SP1. Application installs fine and creates virtual environment. But while uninstalling the application it is not removing the Virtual environment. After uninstalling the application, it is trying to create the virtual environment again which is throwing error in logs. Please help.

Can't get Application Catalog to work with Windows 8

Hi,

I'm running SCCM 2012 SP1 Beta within my Lab and I've successfully deployed some Windows 7 and Windows 8 clients.
Deploying required applications to Win7 and Win8 works nice and I'm able to use the Application Catalog with my Windows 7 clients (after applying DotNet Framework 4.0 Client Profile manually, while it has not been installed during CCM client push installation; anyway). But I couldn't get my Windows 8 clients to work with the Application Catalog at all. As far as I've got only one Device Settings Policy for all my clients, I don't expect this point to be issued.

I'm able to connect to the website and can view the available content, but I neither can install the applications nor I'm able to set the primary device. While trying to do that I always got the error: "This setting cannot be configured because of a network communication or configuration problem."

My LocationService.log is telling me that there is an issue adding a certificate to store.

After hours (probably days?) of troubleshooting and testing I'm in doubt about getting this solved ever.Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
:(
I've got no idea about the failure.

Does anyone got an idea where I should look at. I have not configured anything on the client except adding the CCM client installation user to the local Administrators group to get the client push deployment done and disabling the Windows Firewall to ensure there aren't any network connectivity related issues. I've checked all the other Logs at C:\Windows\CCM\Logs but haven't found further issues.

Your help is really appreciated.

Thank you.

Java deployment requires restart

Hi!

We have installed SCCM 2012 a few months ago and have been learning the ropes and doing a lot of testing. Before the summer we had tested deployment of Java 7.25 thoroughly and it worked just fine. We deployed to a few select clients and the users reported that they didn't see anything and we confirmed that java was updated from older versions.

Now, a month later, I plan to roll out the deployment to all of our computers and I run a quick test and suddenly the deployment restarts the client. I noticed there was some patches to SCCM recently and Software Center seems to have gotten some minor changes with user notices. Also, it only wants to restart the computer when I fire up IE running something with java.

Any ideas what could have happened? What has changed, and what do I do to make the clients not restart the computer after java has been deployed?

Thanks!

Uninstall software automatically after 30 days

Hi,

Do you know if there is a method to uninstall software automatically after 30 days? The software is a microsoft product and is activated via KMS.

Thanks

Any offical/recommended method for minor upgrades MSI (vomus), SCCM 2012 and Applications ?

Looking for tips on how to best handle Windows Installer MSI minor/small upgrades/updates (vomus) for Application objects in SCCM 2012 ? Really hoping Microsoft has started to support their own Windows Installer MSI techniques better.

Some background about scenario we are trying to solve. If we leave SCCM out of the picture and do this manually it would look like this. Get the MSI install media files (MyApp v1.0.0), run 1st time install:
» msiexec.exe /i MyApp.ini /qb-! ALLUSERS=2
A new minor upgrade appears for MyApp, upping ProductVersion to v1.0.1 (ProductCode GUID same, PackageCode changed). But not a major upgrade with changed ProductCode GUID. To save processing/time (not full uninstall /x and then /i), we install it by doing a command-line reinstall/repair. Two variants possible with identical result:
» msiexec.exe /i MyApp.ini /qb-! ALLUSERS=2 REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus
» msiexec.exe /fvomus MyApp.ini /qb-! ALLUSERS=2 REINSTALL=ALL
Works fine. As long as the MSI is authored correctly. The biggest hitch has always been that you cannot, as far as previous history goes, have identical command-line for 1st time install of MSI and possible succeeding reinstall/repairs. Meaning, you have to detect if MSI/ProductCode is installed already, then decide what command-line to use. This behavior is 100% part of Windows Installer MSI logic (Applying Small Updates (or Minor Upgrades)).

In the past in SCCM (Package Model) we have either had wrapper/passthrough utilities before msiexec.exe that performs a check. Or had different advertisements/collections depending on MSI already installed or not on machine. In those cases, we just updated the source path contents for package, updated DP's, re-run advertisement. Then it got executed with correct command-line.

Now we have SCCM 2012 and Application Model. How do we handle this scenario most correctly/efficiently ?

We have tried to research in a test environment. But only way we seem to get it to work is to create a separate new Application object for v1.0.1, then supersede the v1.0.0 Application object. But it feels like total overkill and a waste of time. It should be possible in some way to update existing MSI deployment type in Application object. Then force some action that results in a "re-run" of command-line on clients, with correct reinstall/repair (vomus) depending on MSI installed or not.

Early days for us and SCCM 2012, so really hope we have overlooked something :-)Any pointers in correct direction would be appreciated. Even if it is a confirmation of SCCM 2012 still not supporting this core Windows Installer MSI technique.

Not all users getting pop up notifications about Updates.

I have it set in the client settings and the deployment to show notifications on updates to end users.  My problem is not all users are seeing it event ho the update is listed in the Software Center..  Could something in group policy be overriding this?

Application catalog and notification popups

I am deploying software to users through the Application Catalog. I don't want users receiving the "There is new software available" popup in the system tray.  But, I would still like them to receive all other popups.  Most importantly I'd like them to receive the popup that shows that software was installed successfully when a user completes an install from the app catalog. Is it possible to set up System Center to get the intended results?  Right now I have the client default settings for "Show notifications for new deployments" to No, and the User Experience - User notifications on the deployment set to Display in software center and show all notifications.

Application Installation Hangs up with the condition when no user is logged in.

Hi All

We have deployed an Java application on 1000 users, but on 250 users the application is not installed. The Application will supercede the older versions and kept as mandatory installation.

ExtractContent.exe Fails to Extract content CFileLibrary::GetFullName failed; 0x80070003

I am trying to prestage content on a new DP. I have created all the required Prestage Content Files and copied them onto the new DP. I then run ExtractContent.exe to add the content to the Content Library on the new DP. This starts ok and content is successfully being uncompressed and extracted. However when it gets to a particular package the process comes to halt. Looking in PreStageContent.log I have

I have tried updating the package on the the source DP, that was successful, and re-created the Prestage Content File but the same issue occurs.

Any suggestions as to what the problem with this package might be please?

Thanks,
